CHILDFIND CLINIC

All school districts using the special education process shall find, identify, and evaluate all children suspected to be children with disabilities.  Anyone may refer a child they suspect may have a disability and need special education.  We will be holding a “Child Find Clinic” on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Canterbury Elementary School from 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm and Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Belmont Elementary School from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm for children age 2.5 years or older, but less than 21 years of age.  Certified staff will screen students for possible learning disabilities, speech and language disabilities, motor skills, and overall developmental functioning. The clinic is open to any resident of Belmont or Canterbury, but APPOINTMENTS ARE REQUIRED.  Please contact the SAU office at 267-9223 ext. 5306 for additional information or to make an appointment.

Public Notice

The Shaker Regional School District seeks to locate and identify all children who may have an educational disability. Any person may refer for evaluation of a child under the age 21 for reasons including, but not limited to, the following:

1. Failing to pass a hearing or vision screening
2. Unsatisfactory performance on group achievement or accountability measures
3. Receiving multiple academic or behavioral warnings
4. Repeatedly failing one or more subject

The child find requirements of the district also apply to highly mobile children, homeless children, and children who are suspected of having an educational disability even though they are advancing from grade to grade. Child Find also includes those children in grades K-12 who attend approved, non-public private schools within the geographic boundaries of the Shaker Regional School District, regardless of where they reside.

Referrals may be initiated in a variety of ways. The Director of Student Services may be contacted at 267-9222. For children who attend the Shaker Regional Schools, building principals or classroom teachers may be contacted by anyone wishing to initiate a referral for special services. Students in grades K-12 who attend private schools outside the geographical boundaries of Belmont and Canterbury should contact the district in which the private school is located in order to make a referral for evaluation.
